Internal research projects - year 2013

Project No.: 1279

Project title:

Agricultural labour market: employment (Spěšná)

Head of project:

PhDr. Daniela Spěšná

Ing. Julie Kelnarová, Bc. Miloslav Delín, DiS., Mgr. Pavel Pospěch, Ph.D., Ing. Jan Drlík, Ing. František Nohel, DiS.

The objective of the project is to provide insight into both the current state and the long-term trends of agricultural employment within the frame of the agricultural labour market.

Methodology, assumptions, sources:

The proposal takes cue from theories of agricultural labour market as a specific labour market with a specific dynamics (Whitener, Leslie, A. The agricultural labour market: A conceptual perspective. Research in Rural Sociology and Development, 1989, Vol. 4, Pp. 55-79. ISBN 0-89232-925-4). This dynamics includes a long-term decrease in the number of workers, cyclical trends in unemployment, a specific structure of qualification, aging of the workforce, its interconnectedness with the rural areas and so forth.

The phenomena and processes taking place at the agricultural labour market are studied using:

  • Standard statistical analysis of secondary data (descriptive and comparative analysis, econometric analysis - the Beveridge curve, etc.) (source of the data: ČSÚ).
  • Original measurement tools developed by the team for the study of agricultural unemployment (source of the data: ČSÚ).
  • Methods and techniques of sociological research, including a survey among the graduates of the Agrarian Faculty of MZLU (data collection and analysis will be carried out by the team themselves and analysed using SPSS/PASW).

Outputs and their use:

  • A final report from the project,
  • A paper for a peer-reviewed journal,
  • The results will be employed in the regular (The Green Report, etc.) as well as extraordinary assignments of ÚZEI. They will also be used in the economic models developed by ÚZEI.

A thorough knowledge of the situation at the agricultural labour market is essential for the preparation of agricultural policies and their implementation both on the national level and on the international comparative level of the CAP EU. A continuous monitoring of agricultural employment is necessary for the evaluation of the goals of the public policies.
